Geno Prussakov is a highly respected member of the affiliate marketing community and an internationally recognized expert in the field. His writing style is clear and precise without being intellectually overbearing. Though I have never met or spoken with Geno, I hope to be able to "pick his brain" in the not too distant future. This is not a book on Affiliate Program Management theory. It is a hands on practical guide.My only concern is that the title is somewhat misleading and to some extent demeaning to the treatise. What I believe Geno is trying to convey is to not treat this book as an intellectual exercise, but as a disciplined process guide to initiating an affiliate program. I just think that the "Hour A Day" part could have been improved upon to give a more accurate and enticing impression.Other than that, this is a book that is destined to become a staple read in the industry - a classic.

I typically find books that I need to read for work, well, dull. Pedantic, even. And for the most part, I find they offer advice so generic that they do me little practical good. But this book was different. From the first chapter, I got great tips and ideas to help me manage a piece of business that was thrown abruptly in my lap. And every chapter thereafter served me just as well. The book is easily understood even by complete rubes like me, well-organized, and absolutely chock full of insightful info and tactics. My affiliate program is now well on its way to a great success, and I owe it all to Geno Prussakov. This cookbook has absolutely blown me away. The photos are spectacular and the layout is thoughtful; almost all recipes occupy one page while the facing page is the corresponding photo, making the recipes simple to follow while cooking. The writing is concise and interesting, the recipes are explicitly written, there's a substantial range of flavors and dishes covered, and most importantly - the end results are amazing. [I've posted a list of the recipes at the end of my review.]I have never been to Gjelina, nor had I even heard of it when I ordered the cookbook, but it seemed like the sort of food that I would enjoy - homemade pizza, pasta, roasted vegetables, delicious but not complicated desserts. I wasn't sure where to start, so this cookbook lay around my house for a while, but once I tried the chickpea kale stew, I was completely hooked. I cannot stop cooking dishes from this cookbook. So far, I've made the chickpea stew (it works almost as nicely with canned chickpeas if you are feeling lazy), roasted cauliflower, charred Brussels sprouts with bacon, kale-fennel salad, pomodoro sauce, pizza pomodoro, roasted chicken with braised kale, kabocha squash olive oil cake, and the show-stopping chocolate tart. Every recipe I have tried has been pure gold. I was excited just reading about this cookbook, but now that it’s here, I know I’m not going to be cooking out of it much. It’s not really a home cook’s book, unless you’re a person with a lot of time on your hands, willing to order ingredients online or do some serious hoofing to find them locally. There are some simple recipes for sides and starters, but once you hit the entrees, your ingredient list may range from 12 to 20 items. Most ingredients are accessible enough, but then there’s those ‘add a tablespoon each of tomato confit, garlic confit, and some other confit’ - each confit which requires 6 to 8 ingredients and take 45 minutes to make a cup and a half of something that will hold in your fridge for three days. And there’s the cheese you could get from the artisianal cheesemaker down the block, if you have one, or the heirloom gardener for that certain something, and the pomegranate molasses or wheat berries or…oh, hell. Where do you get this stuff?!I don’t fault the writer or recipes; they are clearly presented and executable. They do state up front that they spike their dishes with all sorts of pickled and flavor-packed confits, which is totally practical for a restaurant - not so much for my family of 3.

I'm cookbook-obsessive, and my stack from this season is literally over 2 feet high. I keep being disappointed by chef-driven books that use ridiculous ingredients in recipes that no normal person would do. Don't get me wrong, I love challenging and inspirational books, but quite frankly many of this genre of books is not inspirational because they aren't unique enough to warrant that title. But enough about the other books that I don't like.I have never heard of Gjelina and so I have never eaten there (what's up with the crazy negative review - if you want every recipe, go get a job there). The narrative was interesting and entertaining. EVERY ingredient is accessible - there are a small handful of items that are seasonal or only going to found at your better markets, but in general, you'll be able to find the stuff or get a decent substitution. The recipes are doable and well-written for the average cook, but interesting enough for all levels to find exciting. And the photography is rich and lush. Lots and lots of recipes. A well done book!

I collect cookbooks. I love to curl up with a new cookbook to feel inspiration. The pictures of fluffy dead bunnies and ducks with their gorgeous feathers in crates as "ingredients" do not inspire me. These pictures deeply disturbed me.

We recently moved back from LA to the East Coast (don't get me started...) and one of the things we miss most is Gjelina/Gjusta. I got this as a gift for my boyfriend, but it has really turned out to be a gift to both of us. We try to cook something from it at least once a week, and it has been so fun to recreate some of the dishes we miss the most. The photography is beautiful and the book is well written and easy to follow. Favorite so far has been the brussels sprouts with bacon and dates -- definitely put it on your "to make" list. If only it included a plane ticket back to LA and a seat on the Gjelina patio *cry face emoji*

We’ve been to the restaurant many times, and now we can replicate their dishes in our own wood fired pizza oven. The recipes are not complicated but require some planning. Everything tastes great. We are vegetarians and found a lot of great ideas.

This book was the first book I ever read by Philip Ball, and it's a part of my permanent keeper collection. I have no recollection as to why I read it in the first place, but as I did so I realized I was listening to a master storyteller of things that I didn't know about. That's a real treat for me - to read an interesting well-written book that clearly outlines something I don't know much about. The main subject, Chartres Cathedral, is well known - PB tells us about why and how it was built, about its' split architecture, the people who built it, and, really, the reasoning that went into it. And the Moorish sources of its' design and how it impacted European thinking. And how Chartres influenced other cathedrals in France, and why the influences were different from Germanic cathedrals built around the same time, and the Norman buildings were different, too!The author ties all these disparate elements together into a seamless, interesting, and very readable book.FEU

This is a serious scholarly study which describes the history, philosophy and architectural aspects of this magnificent cathedral. It probably has more detail concerning individuals who influenced or participated in the decisions, design and its building than is necessary for the average reader, and though interesting, gets laborious. Larger diagrams and better pictures would raise my rating. I enjoyed the book because the author writes well and it is very authoritative. It's descriptions of changing religious and philosophical influences, as well as emphasis on education on the continent, their combined influence on gothic architecture, combine to make this an interesting book.

I've taught an interdisciplinary course entitled "Cathedrals and Other Great Churches of Medieval Europe" a dozen times (twice in England), had Malcolm Miller as a guest lecturer (and tour guide at Chartres in one of my three visits there) and Peter Gibson of the York Minster Stained Glass Workshop as a guest lecturer (and tour guide at York Minster twice), visited more than a hundred medieval and renaissance great churches, and read at least parts of more than half of the books and articles listed in the seven-page bibliography of this book, and, in my judgment, no other book comes close to this one in providing real insight into understanding the great medieval churches. For my course, I used a reader I developed comprising excerpts from dozens of different books to give my students the breadth of ideas, opinions and knowledge needed to understand these great churches. Like many other compilations it suffered from wide variations in the "voices" of the various authors and from unevenness in coverage of the diverse subjects that students needed to grasp the significance of these monuments. I dreamed that some day I would have the time and energy to assemble a coherent anthology -- maybe one with a title like: "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Medieval Churches . . ." but, alas, retirement reared its ugly head and the motivation to do so disappeared. Now, however, Philip Ball has fulfilled my dream, and although he has done so in the context of a single great church, much of what he has written is applicable to most of them. His book makes me wish I hadn't retired so I could use it as a text. Not every reader will understand all of the nuances of the many subjects Ball covers in this book, but every reader with any interest in medieval churches will find this wonderfully well-written book to be not only a fascinating read but also a great addition to his or her library.

In the 1950s, when I was first studying Gothic architecture, the emphasis was on form; successive changes in shape and pattern. Banister Fletcher's tome, "A History of Architecutre on the comparative method" was our reference source and the excellent illustrations reinforced the formal message. When I first taught the subject, in the 1970s, I felt that there should be much more understanding of the context in which architecure comes into being. I put emphasis on economic, social and technical issues as well as the formal ones. Philip Ball's excellent book takes a similar approach though there is relatively little discussion of the economic context, upon which I would have placed greater emphasis. On the other hand, Ball devotes a significant section to the philosophical context in the Middle Ages.Ball is not an architectural historian, but he has read widely and distilled a wide range of knowledge about the great cathedrals of the 12th and 13th centuries, while always focussing on that much-cited masterpiece, Chartres.My previous acquaintance with the author was through his book "Critical Mass, How one thing leads to another". It is a heavywight - literally - book of close to 600 pages and, although quite readable, it demands careful reading. "Universe of Stone" is not like that. It demands much less of the reader without in any way being a shallow interpretation. The illustrations, many of them in colour, are excellent. Dr Ball clearly shares my admiration for the masons responsible for the great edifice and goes to considerable length to show exactly why that admiration is well founded.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I recommend it highly.

About the Author

Mal Peet (1947–2015) was a critically acclaimed and award-winning writer. Besides his young-adult fiction, he wrote several illustrated books for younger children with his wife, Elspeth Graham.Meg Rosoff is the author of How I Live Now, winner of the Michael L. Printz Award. She also received the Carnegie Medal and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and was named a National Book Award Finalist. Meg Rosoff completed Mal Peet’s unfinished novel, a promise she made him before he died. She lives in London.

Liverpool 1907, Anne Beck had just been sacked from her job. On her way home Anne passed a black man stood outside the local pub, as the landlord had refused to serve him. His white shipmates had bought him a drink and a bite to eat, this is what lured her towards him.She took him home with her where they had one night of passion, and then he was gone. The result of that night of passion was born nine months later, Beck.When he was eleven years old, his mother caught the flu and subsequently died, meaning that Beck was sent to a Catholic orphanage.Over the coming years Beck was treated harrowingly. Starting off in Canada, where him and a few of his orphanage friends were sent to stay with priests until the time would come for them to find new homes.Filled with anger and mistrust, did Beck ever get out of the cycle of hardship and cruelty, to become a man who was capable of love, and a happy ending?Firstly, I need to give potential readers a warning. This book has been marked as a Young Adult book, but with graphic scenes of violence, plus emotional, and sexual abuse, I would say this book is not suitable for those under 16. Yes, it is a story true to life and these things happen, but it does leave images in your head, that even I at 39 years old I could not shift for a few days.The book does have you thinking about life and the hardships that black people endured, having been deemed second class citizens and looked down on by society. Beck himself though is a mixed bag, his story is filled with emotion, but at times the writing was a little lacking, meaning that I didn’t always connect with him.The book takes you to some dark places, and yet at times also gives you an uplift. It is thought-provoking, and tough to read in parts, but if you get the chance, I feel that this is going to be one of those books that in the future will become a modern day classic.I’m just sorry that Mal Peet didn’t live long enough to see the end result of his book. My thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review BECK.BECK is beautifully written. It is a difficult read because it is based on historical injustices in the early 1900's. I was drawn into the storyline as the author chronicled Beck's misery as an orphan sent to Canada and all the abuse s he endured. It was very dramatic and terribly brutal and raw. Beck's character didn't evolve until the last 10% of the book. The first 60 pages were terribly graphic depicting child and sexual abuse. The couple with whom he experienced familial love abruptly ended, and their situation was not resolved. Most of the book had unresolved scenarios, but I saw this as a picture of an orphaned black boy: wandering, walking because he had no where to call home , physically and emotionally. Then there was Grace. Grace, the woman, and grace, that divine attribute that had eluded Beck his entire life. The literary elements are breathtaking: the burning tree, the burning man, and Beck's resolve never again to be consumed by the fire of hate and bigotry. The denouement is uplifting, thankfully. Beck finally finds grace and salvation. I am distressed this is considered a children's book, however. It most certainly is not. It is a hauntingly dark, beautifully written saga of a very dark time in history.

This is a brave and beautifully written book. Realistic, yet imaginative and filled with evocative language, it reminded me of the power of human connection to save the soul. I felt like I was along with Beck, the main character, as he made his harrowing journey to self-discovery and love. It brought to mind those rare, yet transformative relationships in my own life and, like them, this book will always be with me.
